In 1999 GKN
started to manufacture an overdrive unit of their own. It features an
28.3% reduction in gear ratio, fuel economy is said to be reduced by
approximatley 20%
The GKN 'R' Type Overdrive
for all Defender 5 speed Land Rover Gearboxes revolutionises the ride on
Land Rover vehicles. The Overdrive unit offers a significant reduction
in vibration and touring comfort, as well as improved fuel economy.
The unit, engineered to GKN's typically high standards, acts as an
effective 6th gear, as well as a splitter 'half' gear between 3rd & 4th
and 4th & 5th gears. It is easily engaged and disengaged via a switch on
top of the gear lever, and brings Land Rover driving into the 21st
century.
